Anne Hastie was born in Melbourne in 1955. She studied painting and printmaking at the Victorian College of the Arts followed by photography at the Photography Studies College, before undertaking post graduate studies at Phillip Institute. In 2007 she completed a Master of Fine Art at RMIT University.
After a career as an art teacher in TAFE, she left the education field to work in public health where she worked in project management.
Following her first visit in 1999, she has travelled to China on a regular basis, often spending up to three months each year in Beijing as an artist in residence with Red Gate Gallery. These opportunities allowed her an extended period of reflection and productivity not readily achieved in Australia. She has a studio in Brunswick, Melbourne.
Anne usually works in a range of paint-related media. She explores the interplay between layers of paint to create intricate abstract images. With strong references to nature, she offers a re-interpretation of the world through fantasy landscapes, imagined aerial perspectives and microscopic views.
